Project Description
Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, welcomes applications for the Nordita Senior Fellows Program, a prestigious senior postdoctoral position for researchers approaching academic independence. We are looking for individuals interested in advancing science through collaboration and openness. The qualifications listed below are guiding and not a strict requirement. We encourage candidates with complementary strengths and diverse research backgrounds to apply, including those who may not meet every requirement. During the appointment, you will have the opportunity to build your CV for future academic positions.
The program aims to develop the next generation of research leaders in theoretical physics and related fields, both in the Nordic region and internationally. Nordita Fellows are expected to conduct independent, ambitious research within Nordita's core areas in theoretical physics. In developing their independent research program, Nordita Fellows are encouraged to collaborate with faculty mentors at Nordita and with other researchers in broader contexts. Special attention will be given to candidates working in the following areas:
- Quantum matter and quantum materials.
- Quantum sensing and quantum technology.
- Complex systems and networks.
- Soft and living matter.
However, all areas represented at Nordita will be considered.
Job Responsibilities
We expect a Senior Nordita Fellow to:
- Conduct high-level independent research in their field.
- Develop into a prominent research leader capable of shaping new collaborations and initiating scientific activities.
- Actively engage in Nordita's scientific environment, including seminars, workshops, programs, and collaborations.
- Contribute to Nordita's community, including mentoring and supervising junior researchers, and participating in academic events.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the position of Senior Nordita Fellow, a PhD in a relevant field or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a relevant PhD is required.
Assessment Criteria
It is advantageous if the PhD or equivalent has been obtained no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, an earlier degree may also be considered advantageous. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, union duties, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant service/assignments in the field.
Particular attention will be given to candidates with prior experience in postdoctoral research. A successful candidate is expected to have a strong track record of independent research, research interests aligned with Nordita's core areas, and demonstrated potential for scientific leadership and future career development.
About the Position
The position is full-time and is limited to 3 years with the possibility of extension for 1 year. The first three years are a senior postdoctoral appointment, which can be extended to a fourth year as a researcher. Fellows are employed at Nordita/SU with full salary and benefits. Funding for travel, visitors, and scientific activities is available and included in the position. Fellows are encouraged to participate in teaching and supervision activities, although this is not a requirement. Start date is negotiable, during the second half of 2026.
